Vertical pivot gates (VPG), sometimes called pivot gate systems, operate similarly to crash arms. In the simplest of terms, this gate works in exactly the same motion as a parking lot or railroad crossing arm, but instead of a single crash arm rising upward, the entire gate/infill panel arcs into the air 90-degrees.
Vertical pivot gates require less space to install than a rolling slide gate or cantilever slide gate. Because the gate opens like a drop arm, there is less interaction with pedestrians because there is no incursion into the property’s roadway entry space like a swing gate. Because the gate lifts upward, it is more adaptable to the uneven or sloped ground that is so often problematic for slide gates. This enables the bottom edge of a vertical pivot gate to operate within 2 inches of the substrate grade or to be designed to accommodate curbs.
Another advantage is vertical pivot gates have faster operating speeds compared to swing and slide gates because the arm does not need to travel the entire horizontal length of the roadway. In terms of access control, a vertical pivot gate can process about 2-3 times more vehicles per minute compared to slide gates. At high volume control points, this can dramatically reduce wait times and tailgating.
Tailgating is the practice of an unauthorized person following closely behind an authorized vehicle or person to improperly gain entry. This often occurs at locations that have slow gate operations where it is possible to follow immediately after the authorized vehicle in front of them that has been given access. This can cause both security breaches as well as accidents that damage the gate. Fast operating gates can act as a psychological deterrent to tailgating attempts.
The most common materials are aluminum, steel, iron and composites.
Vertical pivot gates are used at a variety of low and high security areas:
The industry benchmarks for vertical pivot gates are:
Vertical pivot gates can also be anti-ram rated and you can find them instantly on Protogetic.com. If your project requires a DoD approved gate, check out Protogetic’s 100% digital DoD Anti-Ram Vehicle Barrier list.
Most vertical pivot gates are electric or hydraulic and can be controlled using a card key reader or other access control product, making manned personnel unnecessary. A good example of this would be 24-hour access storage facilities. Some vertical pivot gates are available in a manual configuration.
