    Swing Gates

    What is a swing gate?

Like all gates, the purpose of a swing gate is to create restricted access to a property while still accommodating entering and exiting traffic. A swing gate can be single leaf or double leaf and requires two anchoring posts. For a single leaf gate, one post provides support and the other houses the locking mechanism. With a double leaf swing gate, each leaf is attached to the anchoring post. This requires that the locking mechanism must secure the two leafs in the middle.

Similar to a door, a swing gate's leaf is attached with hinges (pivot point), allowing it to swing open or closed in a semi-circular arc. For this reason, when choosing a swing gate, you need to make sure there is sufficient interior space on the locking side of the gate to accommodate this motion when opening.

What is the advantage of a swing gate?

A swing gate is one of the easiest gates to install and operate and also one of the most affordable. Many consider swing gates the most aesthetically pleasing in that they provide a more residential look rather than a highly securitized military one.

What materials are used to manufacture swing gates?

Swing gates are typically made from aluminum, steel, and iron. Composite materials are occasionally used for special applications like non-conductive gates at airports and electrical sub-stations where metal cannot be used for safety reasons.

    Where are swing gates used?

Swing gates are often used in residential and other low risk facilities because they are a secure yet affordable option compared to more expensive vehicle barrier products. Swing gates are frequently installed at gated communities, residential driveways and self-storage facilities. For more robust protection, anti-ram rated swing gates are often deployed at high security locations like:

    • Industrial facilities
    • Power plants
    • Seaports, Rail yards & Airports
    • Impound lots
    • Restricted-access facilities

What are the rating standards for swing gates?

Perhaps the most applicable standard for gates and fences is UFC 4-022-03 - Security Fences and Gates. ASTM F2200 and UL 325 are also two commonly recognized standards for gates. ASTM F2200 is particularly  appropriate for automated vehicular gates. Swing gates can also be anti-ram rated by ASTM F2656.

    Are all swing gates manual?

No. Swing gates can also have an electric operator but these are obviously more expensive and need more maintenance than manual versions. Electric gates are frequently paired with an access control product like a card reader or keypad.

Are there any security options for swing gates?

Swing gates can be topped with additional deterrents to prevent climbing or collisions into the gate, including:

    • Concertina razor wire
    • Spike toppers
    • Barbed wire
    • Caution signs & lights

Does your project require additional perimeter security?

Protogetic recommends getting a security assessment to determine your facility’s threat risk. When installing a high security gate, it is almost always necessary to integrate it with high security fencing and/or anti-ram vehicle barriers. Protogetic carries all these protective design products, including high security doors, anti-climb fencing and anti-ram fencing in one convenient, digital marketplace.
